Do American printers use A4?
The ISO 216 standard, which includes the commonly used A4 size, is the international standard for paper size. It is used across the world except in North America and parts of Central and South America, where North American paper sizes such as "Letter" and "Legal" are used.
US Letter is defined by the ANSI and used throughout North & South America. It is the standard copy paper sheet and can be used in most home and office printers. A4 sheets have a width of 210 mm and a length of 297 mm. A4 paper size sheets are part of the ISO 216 system that has been internationally adopted.

Letter size paper in the USA measures an easy-to-remember 8.5 by 11 inches. To compare, the closest ISO equivalent, A4 paper, measures 210 × 297 mm. That equals 8.27 x 11.7 when expressed in inches, which is a decidedly less user-friendly number.
NORTH AMERICAN SIZES
The most popular formats of the traditional sizes are the Letter (8.5 × 11 inches), Legal (8.5 × 14 inches) and Tabloid (11 × 17 inches) formats. You more than likely use these formats in your everyday life. Letter is the standard for business and academic documents.
A4 Paper is a standardized copy paper size established by the International Standards Organization. The paper dimensions are 210 x 297 mm. Throughout Europe and the world A4 is the close equivalent to U.S. letter size (8.5" x 11"), but measuring 8.27 x 11.69 inches.
A4 printers will print A4 and US/letter size (which is often what people print on in a home office setting), but will not print those larger sizes. Both printers can be outfitted with print/copy/scan/fax capabilities, although A4 has some limitations.

To resolve this issue, change the default paper size of your printer: Click Start, point to Settings, and the click Printers. Right-click the appropriate printer, and then click Properties. Click the Paper tab, and then click the paper size you want to use in the Paper Size box.
If you're in the United States or Canada, standard printer paper dimensions for most documents is that of the standard letter paper size, which is 8.5 inches by 11 inches. In much of the rest of the world, it is A4, which is 297 millimeters by 210 millimeters.
Is US letter size bigger than A4?
The difference is minimal, but important: A4 is a little taller, while Letter is a little wider. Those of you from North America will be familiar with an entirely different set of paper formats to the rest of the world.
If a client from the US sends you a document, they're likely to expect you to print it in US Letter size – the standard 8.5˝ by 11˝ paper measurement. The same is true for people in Canada. In the UK, and various other parts of the world, we use the A4 paper size, measuring 8.27” by 11.7”.
Letter at 279mm (11.0") is slightly smaller than A4 at 297mm (11.7"), both Legal at 356mm (14.0") and Foolscap at 330mm (13.0") are longer than A4 with Legal being the longest. Foolscap is the narrowest at 203mm (8.0"), followed by A4 at 210mm (8.3") and then Letter and Legal at 216mm (8.5").
The measurements of A4 paper are 8.27 x 11.67 inches and they conserve the ratio between width and length of √2.
8.5 x 11 or letter size paper: 8.5 x 11 is the standard size for most printers. It's also the size used for a wide range of standard documents, including magazines, catalogs, letters, and forms.

Size A4 has its shortest edge (210mm) doubled to be the longest edge of A3 (420mm). A3 has its shortest edge (297mm) doubled to be the longest edge of A2 (594mm).
No, A4 is not the same size as an 8.5 x 11-inch paper, although they are close in measurement. Since A4 is part of the ISO 216 standards, A4 measures at 8.3 x 11.7 inches, therefore is just slightly larger.
The Print options in the Word Options dialog box. Note the option, near the bottom of this section, called Scale Content for A4 or 8.5 x 11" Paper Sizes. This option is selected by default in Word. It apparently comes into play with some printers or if you are printing to a PDF file.
If you put two pages of one size together to create a new sheet of paper, they will have the same aspect ratio, according to Ezeep. Some argue that the U.S. doesn't use metric measurements, so they are unable to adopt A4.

Is it true that it's hard to find A4 sized paper in the US, and if so, why? A4 sized paper is a metric size. Since the US mostly measures things in inches it just isnt a normal item. For the same reason you won't find gas stations selling gas in litres.

The A Series
The A4 is part of the ISO "A Series," where A0, the first dimension, equals almost one square meter (841x1189mm = 999,949 square mm). Starting with A1, each size is one half the square surface area of the previous size while maintaining the same aspect ratio.

Letter or ANSI Letter is a paper size standard defined by the American National Standards Institute, commonly used as home or office stationery in the United States, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic and the Philippines.
If you are printing draft copies, quality will not matter too much, so plain copier paper is good enough. However, if you are printing a final draft or color presentations, etc., a thicker coated paper, matte paper, is recommended because it allows for sharper colors and a better resolution image.

Standard paper sizes are different throughout the world. A4 is a European paper size that roughly equates to the American 8.5x11”, and A3 is roughly 11x17”, and believe it or not, this was largely determined by the length of a Dutchman's arms in the mid-1600s.

Paper used to be made by hand, and the molds that it was made from measured 44 inches by 17 inches. This was used to create eight 8.5-inch-by-11-inch pieces, of what became known as “letter.”
