Can hedge trimmings be used as mulch?

Hedge/shrub prunings and stems from younger trees or tree suckers can be shredded and applied directly as a fresh mulch on unplanted or planted areas.

Twigs, Cuttings and Canes

If twigs are about the width of a pencil or smaller, break them into small sections so they fit in a compost bin. Twigs and small branches actually create blank space in the bin's compost pile, thereby aerating it. Put tender rose cuttings in the bin as well .

Like all plant matter, conifers, including Leylandii, can be composted but most people avoid adding them to their usual compost heap. The branches and leaves are very acidic so can upset the balance of your compost heap and later, your soil.

Grass clippings, shrub and yard clippings, branches, woodchips, bark, wood, palm trees and branches, and weeds are all included. The term "green Waste" refers to biodegradable garden or park waste. Green waste includes hedge trimmings, grass and flower clippings, as well as home and commercial food waste.

We recommend avoiding hedge cutting during the main breeding season for nesting birds, which usually runs throughout March to August each year. This can be weather dependent and some birds may nest outside this period, so it is important to always check carefully for active nests prior to cutting.

Once lavender is pruned, the plants enter their winter dormancy until the new growth appears in the spring. After you have pruned all your plants, you'll likely have quite a collection of clippings. These clippings make a wonderful garden mulch or, at the very least, addition to the compost bin.

Technically, you can transfer your cuttings to soil at any time. In fact, you can actually propagate directly into soil, however, it's much harder to do within your home. When you propagate in soil, you have to keep a good balance of soil moisture, air flow, and humidity. That can be very hard to do inside.

Roses can be composted just like other flowers. Although leaves and grass form a large part of many compost piles, trimmings from roses as well as other shrubs can also make a contribution to the compost.

Can I Compost Leylandii Branches and Hedge Clippings? Most composting advice states that Leylandii and pine needles are hard to compost in a traditional compost bin (around 10°c) taking anything from 2-5 years, however by hot composting in the HOTBIN at around 40-60°c these instead break down in around 90 days.

I shred bits that fall off my conifers and stack them at the back of one of them, I also add weepings from the paths and flatroof that contain a lot of pine needles; leave them to decompose (slow) and then use as a mulch for acid loving plants.

Woody material of any age will rob nitrogen from the soil IF it is dug in. Used purely as a surface mulch it shouldn't do so. That said, I'd be very careful about using fresh leylandii mulch - I think it might be a bit acidic for most plants.

There's only one sure-fire way to tell if your product/packaging is made to be composted and safe for our soils: look for this label! The BPI label represents a scientific testing process that ensures these products will safely break down in a commercial composting facility.

Many local recycling centers now accept organic garden waste for free, and is the quick and easy way to get rid of your grass clippings for free.

Leaves are one of the most valued compost materials because they are carbon-rich and small enough to be easily incorporated into the compost. Deciduous leaves are best; do not use evergreen leaves such as holly, laurel and conifers. Wait until the leaves start turning brown before raking them up.

The burning of agricultural waste, such as bushes, hedge trimmings and tree tops, is no longer allowed on farms.

Further to the above measures, it is important that farmers note that it is illegal to burn any living vegetation between 1st March and 31st August each year pursuant to the Wildlife Act, 1976, as amended, as this is the bird nesting season.

Farmers are allowed to burn waste, such as bushes and hedge cuttings, until the end of the month and then again from 1 September.

Plants or Wood Treated with Pesticides or Preservatives

Never add any plants to your compost that have been treated with insecticides, fungicides, or herbicides. The residue of chemicals used in the garden to kill insects and control plant diseases can unintentionally kill the beneficial composting organisms.

DON'T add meat scraps, bones, grease, whole eggs, or dairy products to the compost pile because they decompose slowly, cause odors, and can attract rodents. DON'T add pet feces or spent cat liter to the compost pile. DON'T add diseased plant material or weeds that have gone to seed.

Secondly, do not add thorny rose stems, bulbs, any flowers that have been treated with toxic herbicides and certain poisonous plants to your compost. The overall reason is that they can slow down the decomposition process, with the thorny stems as well as bulbs, corms and tubers taking up to two years to rot.
